Berta Giles Welch

Berta Giles Welch is resident of Martha's Vineyard, born and raised on the island, living in Aquinnah.  She is an artist that has shown at the National Museum of American Indian in Washington DC, the Heye Museum in New York and the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor ME. Berta manages a family business that has been operating for over 85 years in Aquinnah.

Berta is a member of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head and has been involved with town government for many years. She is on the Aquinnah Planning Board, and the Aquinnah Wampanoag Health Board.  She is also the Co-Chairperson of the Aquinnah Cultural Center.

Berta has taken the basic mediation training provided by MVMP and observed several small claims court mediations. Berta appreciates the benefits and concepts of mediation and looks forward to learning more about the process. As board co-chair of the Aquinnah Cultural Center, Berta partners with MVMP as we implement the MOPC Community Youth Grant, Each One Teach One: Wampanoag Elders Preserve Tribal History, Culture and Conflict Resolution Practices
